How To Direct RSS to Twitter September 11, 2007

There are some RSS feeds I’d rather have show up in my Twitterific window than in my Google Reader. So, after making an embarrassing public mistake and routing some RSS to all my Twitter followers (NOT what I wanted to do), it became obvious to me how to do this.

#1: Set up a second Twitter account - mine is set up as http://twitter/nickfeeds. In the Settings, check the box that says “Protect my updates” so that it doesn’t show up in the public timeline and people can’t follow it (unless you give them specific permission).

#2 Set up an account at http://twitterfeeds.com if you don’t already have one. Create a new Twitter feed for each RSS you want to re-direct through to your normal Twitter window and direct it to your normal Twitter ID (mine is at http://twitter/nicknich3).

#3 Log in to your normal Twitter ID; go to the special Twitter account page you set up (e.g. in my case I would go to http://twitter/nickfeeds) and request to Follow that user.

#4 Log out of your normal Twitter account and log into your special Twitter account and accept the request (from yourself) to follow your special account.

Voila - The RSS feeds will show up in your normal Twitter window without being broadcast to all your Followers.

One example of how I’m using this is that I’ve set up the RSS feed for my Facebook Friends’ status updates (go to FB –> Friends –> Status Updates to get the feed) to go to my Twitter window - which for me is a better mode for monitoring that than my RSS reader.
