Net Office February 14, 2007
Yuga talks about netrepreneurs today. I didn’t count it up, but I score pretty high.
I find that I can live without a permanent, fixed office. Almost everything that supports my work now resides “in the cloud.” Data, applications, are all on the internet. Even if my laptop dies, I can go to an internet cafe and not miss a beat.
For P200/hour, just as an example, The Richmonde Hotel can provide me with a fully equipped office (internet, printer, phone, fax, coffee, newspapers) whenever I need it when I’m in Manila. Others similarly. Plop my iSight onto my laptop, stick in my ear sets and I’m video-calling anywhere in the world almost anytime I want to.
I can rent a small conference room at the EDSA Shangri-La (and I’m sure all the others have it) with professional teleconferencing equipment and I’m on a teleconference with attorneys in Houston. It costs me P800/hour! What a deal - pay for what you need, when you need it and I don’t have to be burdened with buying a lot of equipment.
Drop in any coffee shop and check emails (may have to pay P100, but I don’t pay office rent so who cares). But most hotels are free wi-fi anyway in the lobby and coffee shops.
Hell, I live in Bukidnon now. Yeah, it takes me a few hours to get to the airport in CdO, and I pay for a couple of trips to Manila a month - but I don’t have Manila office expenses.
It’s truly amazing what these publicly available facilities and infrastructure are enabling us to do now a days.
