Blogging from Malaybalay City, Philippines

PhoneCon September 20, 2006

I joined Jeneane’s PhoneCon last night because … well … I’ll support just about anything Jeneane wants to try.  I don’t know Jeneane actually … though I’ve been following her … convulsions? at her weblog for some time. I do feel I’ve gotten to know parts of her and have developed a high level of trust.

This is a one way street. She knows nothing about me. But that’s ok. This is the way the web often works. I get value out of a unilateral trust relationship.

It was an interesting experiment, though. And since I’m exactly 12 hours out of sync with Atlanta and 7 or 8 thousand miles away I thought it might contribute to her effort.

The interesting thing about my setup is that I have Vonage account and a Vonage modem hooked into my router.  Now, Vonage doesn’t know that I’m in the Philippines … or at least they don’t care.  I have a Bradenton, Florida area code.  And when someone dials that number, a phone in the Philippines rings.  It’s sitting right here on my desk. How weird is that?

Of course, having a US number with Vonage means that when I dial a US number it’s a no-cost deal for me - even though I’m sitting in Davao City, Philippines.  If I dialed a Philippine number, it would be 20-30 cents a minute - but why would I do that. I would just pick up my Philippine phone instead.
