Porous Journalism September 6, 2006

Percolation is percolatin’ and the PDI’s editorial policies are sucking wind lately. Will they simply publish just anything now? Is anybody in charge of journalistic integrity?

I have a sneaking suspicion Samson Macariola is not the bad guy here. Regardless, both Arlyn de la Cruz and the PDI have some responsibility here.

I know how a journalist can turn the contextual reality of private interview into something entirely different when the article hit’s the presses.

Newsbreak did somewhat of an expose on Arlyn back in 2002. I don’t know Arlyn - she’s definitely got more balls than I do. Nevertheless it’s clear she’s out to make a buck. There’s nothing wrong there but you’ve got to realize her modus operandi. Is she still freelancing? I can only imagine that with her Mindanao connections she saw a huge opportunity to extract a tidy payment from PDI for an exclusive - and Samson may have had no idea what was going down.

From what I can tell, he’s a straight shooter. Scroll down the page here and you can see that he was one of the resource speakers at last year’s Defense & Sporting Arms Show. His co-presenters for the afternoon of July 14 included a talks on “Gun Safety & Responsible Gun Ownership” and “Threat Awareness.” His topic was “Basic Technical Facts about Firearms, Ammunitions & Explosives.”

Here’s a picture of Adamson University’s Civil Engineering batch of ‘84-’85. Is that the same Samson Macariola on the right in the top photo?

I have a suspicion atrocious journalistic practices are at work here. If there are lies in the initial PDI article by Arlyn, and it’s looking more and more like there may be - just what is the PDI going to do about it?

Their editorial here is once again diverting attention away from the issues, like they did with the Isagani Cruz affair . This is not about sub-atomic particles and puffer machines.

Yeah I’m tough on the PDI. They have the capability, and track record, to do better. The question is do they still have the will.
