Data Fight May 14, 2006
Jeff Jarvis wants to jump right over the privacy issue and change the to topic to "who owns the wisdom of the crowds" and "new assets." Whoa! First things first.
This (the public outcry) is not about use of aggregate data - it’s all about potential for misuse of private data.
When he writes that the issue is being "spun under the dark cloud of privacy violation" and uses terms like "privacy buggabuzzword", you know precisely where his prejudices lie.
That’s OK. It’s an opinion piece, then. But one that’s disguised.
If Mr. Disclosure (and I say that with respect) had just said up front that he supports the NSA’s collection of this data, then I would have less of an issue with this.
But his stating that "the law and ethics around aggregate data are not clear" is the journalistic equivalent to a misdirection play - and a very insidious one IMO. To me it is equivalent to saying "move right along people, there’s nothing to see here."
The government should wish we all played that game. Not me mister; not this American.
